The Circus proposal for the San Fernando de Henares Park and Fairgrounds was created to transform a peri-urban area into a public space of great environmental, cultural and social value, connecting the urban fabric with the natural landscape of southeast Madrid and, in particular, with the Southeast Regional Park and the Jarama River. Its privileged location allows it, through a sensitive and sustainable intervention, to offer the local community and visitors a new centrality that responds both to the needs of daily recreation and leisure and to the demand for large occasional events, fairs, markets and festivals.
The project focuses on the local need for a space for activities of community interest, to make it an active green lung throughout the year to promote biodiversity, environmental education and social interaction. The design proposes a balance between the more natural areas, where it seeks to maximise the positive ecological impact, and the more urbanised areas, prepared for recreational and cultural activities.
The intervention is guided by four fundamental principles: sustainability, adaptability, accessibility and connectivity. Sustainable design is reflected in the choice of local and recyclable materials, the use of renewable energies and efficient water management, with a system that uses rainwater and minimises the need for irrigation.
Adaptability is present in the flexibility of the spaces, which can accommodate different events and uses at different times of the year. Universal accessibility guarantees that all citizens, regardless of their age or physical condition, can enjoy the park equally, eliminating all types of architectural barriers and changes in level with respect to the existing.
Finally, connectivity is understood in a double sense: physical, through integration with the urban fabric and the surrounding ecological corridors; and social, through the creation of spaces that favour meetings, cultural exchange and collective well-being.
