The exhibition shows the contemporary dialogue between the domestic sphere and the urban sphere, and how these two interact with numerous other components of society and modify each other. Indeed, in the contemporary era, the failure of modern techniques and theories, which have been reflected in an unlimited urban sprawl, a separation of man from the city, an isolation of the domestic sphere, and a distancing of the productive sphere, contrasts sharply with the success of global economic and political practices. These, as is well known, dictate the pace of society, to the detriment of what architects think, and as such are the predominant forces capable of producing change. Alongside these, there are also recent developments concerning the ‘liberation’ of women from the domestic sphere, the form of work (which for some is a departure from the classical capitalist system of production, while for others is its quintessence), the unsustainability of a high quality of life in a limitless city, the abandonment of the garden city model by urban planners, the rediscovery of the human dimension, the introduction of a reading of the city as a complex and changing system, developments in technology, policies to abandon the car, and the creation of a new philosophy of man. It is therefore impossible to think that our way of life (and by this I mean its broadest meaning, ranging from sociology to architecture) remains anchored to a model more than a century old.
